Objetivos

The objectives of this subject are two-fold. Firstly, active competence in the production, rather than the simple comprehension of English is improved such that there is less discrepancy between students' active and passive abilities in the language. Secondly, the student should come to understand the peculiarities implied in constructing a translation in the English language, rather than in the native tongue.

Conocimientos previos

Students are expected to have a good level of English, and a general translator competence corresponding to that of a second year translation student.

Metodología

An effort is made to combine theory and practice in this course, in such a way that the theory sessions are related immediately and directly to practice. Several Catalan texts are employed in this subject, which are chosen to be very broadly representative of Catalan texts in general. As students translate the texts, every difficulty they come across is studied at some length until a complete understanding of the reasons behind the final choice(s) is obtained. When the students find a similar construction in another text, they will then be able to translate it competently.
The analysis of why a student has made an error, or why his or her translation is inadequate implies a discussion of the grammar and registers of the constructed text.

Evaluación

Students will be assessed in a final exam. They will have to translate a Catalan text similar to one of those seen in class into English. Marks are given for good and correct use of English, and good translation.

Temario de teoría

The theory part of this subject covers difficulties in the active use of English. Students are often perfectly capable of understanding a text which they could not themselves produce. The grammatical theory is studied from many different angles until the students are capable of producing the English constructions which had been familiar to them from reading. The different registers of English are studied. The practice part of this subject implies the translation of various Catalan texts in the English language.
A dossier of texts and has been prepared for use in class and is available on request at the campus photocopying service.
