Objetivos

The main objective of this subject is to get familiar with the main characteristics of the Middle English language and period. A review of the main facts, the morphological structure and textual production will be overviewed.

Metodología

Lectures in English, combined with different activities proposed by the lecturer

Evaluación

The students will take a written exam, consisting in different questions and practical exercises related to the class material. A good performance of English is expected, and the lack of comprehensible and well written answers will lead to penalization. If the command of English is non-existing or non intelligible, the result of the exam will be fail, independently of the command of the content.

• Reviewing Old English: connecting periods
• Relevant historical events until 1500
• Linguistic features of Middle English:
o Middle English orthography and phonology
o Middle English morphology and syntax
o Middle English vocabulary
• Study of texts
o Patterns of analysis: a guide to approach Middle English texts
o Selection of texts (to be provided by the teacher)
• A summary of the period: preparing the transition towards Modern English.
